The Golden Guernsey Goat
The Golden Guernsey is a small, fine-boned dairy goat with a moderate milk yield. The ears are erect with a slight upturn at the tips, giving them an elfish charm. Facial line may be dished or straight. Wattles/tassels are not allowed. The Golden Guernsey Goat has skin that is a shade of gold, neither pink nor grey. Coat can be all shades of gold with or without small white markings and blaze or star on head. No Swiss markings allowed.. Hair may be long or short.
At present, there are very few animals in the US, and they have been added to the rare breeds trust in England due to their limited genetics and numbers.
The Golden Guernsey is believed to have originated from the Isle of Guernsey, along with other nearby Channel Isles. Those are in turn, thought to have descended from goats brought by sailing ships from the island of Malta.
To learn more about these beautiful, golden goats, visit the official website of the
Golden Guernsey Goat Society
in Great Britain. There are some other links to breeders in the US, and lots of pictures of these golden beauties in England.

Answer to the November Quiz:
Phenotype is what an animal looks like and is determined by genotype- what genes that animal has. For a more in depth look at genetics and heredity, visit this site:

Helpful hints:
My dam raised kids are wilder than the bottle babies I am used to, and this made vaccinating them a challenge! I got my boyfriend, Marty to help and we put them into the crowd pen all together. Then I would take a chain collar and a double ended lead and ease up to the prospective victim. Ideally, I would get a hold of the kid under her neck and get the collar then, then clip the lead to the fence. Marty would take an ordinary bath towel and put it under the kid like a sling at her flank. When I had the shots ready he would gently lift the hindquarters up just enough that she had no traction with her “kickers”. Shots given, we released both ends and went on to the next kid. Crowding them made catching them easy and the sling made shots much less stressful (for all of us!). These kids are large (80#s plus) and the only excitement we had was when one took flight (like with wings) and went over the fence. Of course, then she wanted back in!!

That’s all for this month,…
See you next month!!
